Based on the bestselling, award-winning novel by Irvin Yalom, When Nietzsche Wept tells the story of obsession, a drama of love, fate and will that formed the basis of modern psychoanalysis.
Friedrich Nietzsche, Sigmund Freud, Dr. Josef Breuer, and Anna O - these compelling characters cross paths when Breuer and Freud as a 26-year-old medical intern agree to treat Nietzsche, a sick, poor and unknown philosopher. They are brought together by a heartbreaking love triangle and Lou Salome, a mysterious young woman of uncommon beauty who defied the morals of the age in which she lived. The unattainable Lou convinces Dr. Breuer to experiment on Nietzsche's suicidal mind with his controversial "talking cure." In attempting to cure the philosopher, Breuer finds himself the patient. The two enter a world where dreams and reality are one. Breuer is forced to deal with his own obsession with Anna O, while Nietzsche must forget the one love of his life.
The story follows the dramatic lives of two of the most important and enigmatic men who would change the course of Europe's intellectual history and the intriguing women who inspired and ruined them. Nietzsche and Breuer plumb the depths of their own romantic obsession and discover the redemptive power of friendship and love.
