In this initial diagnostic session, Ellie Irwin, a drama therapist and psychologist, sees a troubled four-year-old child who repeatedly injures herself. Inviting the child to play in a sandbox with miniature life toys, Irwin narrates the ensuing play, attempting to understand why the child has internalized her aggression.Throughout the session, Irwin uses play to help the girl share her narrative. The enactment of the child’s experiences provides an opportunity for her to take on different roles and direct the therapist’s participation in the session. Using questioning and reflective listening, the therapist is able to keep the child engaged and working through difficult emotions and experiences. This session demonstrated the benefits of using sand tray to facilitate sharing of the trauma narrative in a non-threatening manner.
