Overview
How can you provide effective and lasting relief for clients who feel defeated in their battle against OCD? Discover groundbreaking strategies for giving your OCD clients the courage and self-help skills needed to get their lives back.
Clients with OCD have an intentional bias towards threat, ever scanning their bodies and outside world for signs and signals of threat, uncertainty and danger; living diminished lives. They cleave to their irrational beliefs and paralyzing rituals for warding off anxiety, leaving even the most experienced therapist frustrated. Learn how to help clients overcome OCD by embracing their uncertainty and anxiety rather than attempting to ritualize it away. Equip them with strategies to break repetitious patterns using exposure, pattern disruption, ritual modification and other brief cognitive behavioral interventions for OCD.
A leading authority in the treatment of obsessive-compulsive disorders known for his innovative, counterintuitive, and highly effective methods, Reid Wilson knows that these clients don’t spontaneously recover, and that medication has limited efficacy. From decades of experience, he will teach you to help shift their frame of reference from escaping uncertainty through ritual and obsession to embracing the discomfort of exposure — CBT’s gold standard approach with Wilson’s groundbreaking twist. By implementing small in-session cognitive experiments and integrating mastery-oriented homework assignments, Wilson will show you how to help clients access their courage, confront their fears, and live fully, free from the grip of OCD.
Live demonstrations of his approach with three challenging OCD clients, Wilson’s running voiceover commentaries, and pre- and post-session analyses with Psychotherapy.net’s founder Victor Yalom, offer added depth to increase your confidence and skill when working with these most challenging clients.

What’s Included
The Secret to Helping Clients Overcome OCD is Teaching Them to Embrace It.
Sounds crazy, right? But OCD expert Reid Wilson will teach you how to use brief, paradoxical cognitive behavioral interventions to equip your clients with tools to break free from the compulsive rituals and repetitious patterns that consume their lives.
Volume 1: Engaging the Ambivalent OCD Client
The ambivalent OCD client poses a unique challenge for clinicians. Kathleen’s “washer” and “checker” compulsions are consuming her life yet she cannot let them go. In two sessions, OCD expert Reid Wilson plants seeds that grow into a desire to change.
Wilson demonstrates and discusses:
- Clear protocols for exposure experiments
- Cognitive interventions to alleviate, rather than validate, the need for reassurance Techniques for confronting safety-seeking behaviors
- Tips on motivating clients to stay committed
- How to give clients the courage to do the hard work that is necessary
Volume 2: Treating the Severe OCD Client
Severe OCD can seem hopelessly intractable. Months of previous exposure-based therapy hasn’t given Bob much relief; he comes to Wilson claiming now his OCD is worse than ever. Consumed with “repeater” behavior that detracts from his life goals, Bob lacks tools to manage his anxiety, and lacks hope for change.
In two sessions, Wilson demonstrates:
- How to leverage client strengths
- Interventions to move toward the anxiety that drives compulsive cognitive-ritualizing behaviors
- A Framework for engaging with discomfort and fundamentally changing client circumstances.
Volume 3: Cognitive Therapy for Obsessions
When clients struggle with obsessional thinking patterns, many therapists aren’t sure how to help their clients free themselves from the torture of fearful thoughts. Rita is plagued with anxiety about her health. Trying to avoid anything that triggers her fears, Rita is missing out on living the active lifestyle she longs to live.
Wilson demonstrates and discusses:
- How to encourage clients to rise above the content of their obsessive thoughts
- Cognitive behavioral interventions for moving towards fears
- Experiential exercises for learning to tolerate uncertainty
- Tips for fostering courage and hope
