This video is an overview of the development of the field of art therapy, beginning with the encouragement of psychiatrists in different parts of the world who were intrigued by the spontaneous art of mental patients and who saw its therapeutic value. The film introduces some of the physicians who made it possible for patients to create, who invited artists into hospitals, and who trained many early art therapists. Included is the story of the International and the American Society of Psychopathology of Expression, the American Art Therapy Association, and the global development of art therapy in the 20th century by pioneers in many lands.
