Overview

The best therapy occurs when something new is happening. We all know what it feels like when sessions are truly alive, but don’t always know what to do to make that happen. In this groundbreaking 3-volume course, you’ll learn a variety of tools and techniques to bring life to each and every session.

Victor Yalom and Orah Krug have had the great fortune to learn from some of the leading experts in their field, and in this Masterclass in Advanced Psychotherapy Skills you’ll see them working with real clients demonstrating and discussing powerful techniques to make therapy as effective and alive as possible. From deepening client self-discovery, to working in the here-and-now, and learning ways to help clients get unstuck, this course is deep dive in fundamental skills often not formally taught.

Over 5 years in the making, culled from over 100 hours of actual client sessions, this 3-volume masterclass will teach you some of the most powerful methods to assist clients in making meaningful changes to the lives. Therapists of any level of experience and orientation will find this course to be enlightening and thought-provoking.

What’s Included

You’ll learn how to:

  • Model risk-taking and vulnerability to heighten and authenticity and support client growth
  • Discuss the benefits of working in here-and-now and how it relates to clients’ “real world” relationships
  • Use process comments for deepening clients’ access to their emotions
  • Practice relational patience and presence, engaging clients with empathy and curiosity
  • Prompts to help intellectualized clients access their intrapersonal worlds
  • Identify clients’ common protective styles and apply tailored interventions based on these patterns

Volume 1: Deepening Client Self-Discovery
Watch Yalom and Krug as they demonstrate simple, effective interventions that quickly help clients discover new things about themselves and empower them to enact the changes they desire.

You’ll learn the importance of…

  • The process of searching inward to connect clients to their inner world of emotions
  • Using process comments to draw attention to what is experienced but unsaid and to reveal the emotions behind the words your clients are speaking
  • Why underlying therapist presence is critical and how modeling openness and vulnerability helps clients learn to do the same

Volume 2: Working in the Here-and-Now
Explore the power of using the here-and-now—which shifts the focus from discussing past experiences or intellectualizing about issues to actively engaging with what is unfolding in the therapeutic relationship in real time.

You’ll learn…

  • The when and how of bringing here-and-now work into sessions
  • How to use the therapeutic relationship as a catalyst for improving client interpersonal functioning
  • Effective use of self-disclosure to inform and empower clients with in-the-moment feedback

Volume 3: Working with Stuck Clients
Designed to help therapists address recurring frustrations and clinical roadblocks that often stall therapy, Yalom and Krug tackle the nuanced challenge of working with “stuck” clients – those individuals who have long-standing protective patterns that obstruct deeper emotional work.

You’ll learn how to…

  • Spot protective patterns early to uncover the real source of therapeutic stuckness
  • Identify and name recurring client metaphors or stories that reveal hidden protective mechanisms
  • Use process comments and here-and-now statements to deepen clients’ awareness of how others experience them
