Overview
Victor Yalom has spent 30 years studying and producing videos with many of the legendary therapists of our time. Now he takes all he has learned from these encounters and shares the most powerful pearls of clinical wisdom from these masters.
In Volume 1 of Masterclass in Advanced Psychotherapy Skills, Yalom and renowned clinician, Orah Krug, demonstrate simple yet powerful techniques to quickly help clients discover new things about themselves, which can unlock new possibilities for your clients and empower them to enact the changes they desire. You’ll observe Yalom and Krug in therapy sessions with real clients, so you can experience what these techniques look like in practice and discover how to apply step-by-step. Most importantly, these fundamental skills can complement all therapeutic approaches and are effective with all populations.
Clients come to therapy in pain, unsure how to resolve their problems. Often too much time is wasted with clients talking about themselves instead of actually discovering new things about themselves. But this doesn’t have to be the case. Watch how Yalom and Krug direct their clients inward—leading them into unexplored aspects of their inner lives, including emotions, thoughts, bodily sensations, imagery, and more. You’ll learn specific techniques such as directing clients inward; persistently nudging them to go deeper and making process comments which amplify clients’ awareness. From the first session to the last, you can use these skills to help your clients engage in the internal discovery process that is at the heart of psychotherapy. Volume 1 features in-session videos of four real clients which, along with extensive commentary and discussions, bring to life powerful ideas that can greatly enhance the effectiveness of your work.

Searching Inward
Although not a new concept, the process of searching—directing clients’ attention inward—is a skill that many clients need to be taught, and many therapists are unsure how to lead the way. Yalom and Krug show you simple but powerful techniques for helping clients navigate their world of emotions.

- Use the therapeutic relationship to help clients with interpersonal issues

You’ll learn how to…
- Model openness and vulnerability to help clients learn to do the same
- Empower clients to take risks in their own lives
- Use the here-and-now to avoid and repair ruptures
