Overview

This film documents the use of art as therapy in a variety of prisons and detention centers for adults and adolescents across the United States. Testimonials from incarcerated people of all ages provide a moving glimpse into the importance of providing art and art therapy in the prison system. Enabling those who are locked up for long periods of time to tap into their creativity promotes a positive sense of self. In addition to the pride inmates take in their creations, the activity also provides a constructive and pleasurable way to spend leisure time as well as to learn new skills. The powerful negative emotions that got folks in trouble in the first place can be safely expressed without consequence and thereby sublimated. Prison officials from different settings detail how art therapy reduces incidences of violence and recidivism among participants, and creates a sense of community and connection. The potential for art therapy to assist in the rehabilitation process is widely discussed, including goals and the use of various materials. The viewer gets a glimpse, not only of many different locations and programs, but also of the diverse working styles of different art therapists. In some settings, exhibiting their art is also a significant component of the program and its therapeutic benefit.
