Overview

Traditional efforts to teach therapy have become mired in the gulf between theory and practice. Divorced from the richness of peoples’ lives, formulaic interventions that are bereft of theory can  replace the curiosity and joy of connecting. With this breach in mind, Michael White and David Epston created their Narrative model which directed clinical attention away from pathology toward what would later be re-imagined as, “practice stories.”

Just as good literature shows lived experiences instead of telling about them, clinical educators must move away from ‘teaching’ practice to ‘showing’ it. This is the essence of practice stories—the illuminated intersections of clinical curiosity and anthropological investigation of peoples’ lives. They are an attempt to move from objectifying to re-humanizing in helping and healing our clients. In this webinar, you will not just learn about the power of practice stories though discussions, but see them exemplified in real moments.

Join us in watching Narrative Therapy co-founder, David Epston, and renowned practitioners, Tom Carlson and Travis Heath as they balance humor, affection, and enthusiasm recounting the evolution of narrative practices and fielding audience questions. You’ll discover how practice stories can be adapted to fit your own style and model of clinical intervention

What you'll learn

  • Augment your own therapeutic approach with practice stories that expand rather than reduce clients’ lived experience
  • Direct therapeutic attention to who people are, how their problems evolved, and what kind of change is possible
  • Integrate practice stories into your own clinical and teaching approaches
