Fire & Sand – Sandplay as Therapy after a Volcano Eruption

On May 3, 2018, Kilauea erupted, triggering months of earthquakes and widespread destruction across Hawaii’s lower Puna district, displacing thousands. Fire and Sand, an award-winning documentary by a psychologist and first-time filmmaker, captures the community’s response and healing process. Through firsthand accounts, the film explores trauma, resilience, and renewal, interwoven with the living mythology of Pele, the Hawaiian volcano goddess. Featuring local teachers, mental health professionals, and evacuees, it highlights the use of mobile Sandplay Therapy in disaster recovery. The film offers insight into how communities can mobilize and heal in the face of catastrophic natural events.
