William R. Miller is the founder of Motivational Interviewing, an approach originally developed for use in the addictions field, but now widely used in counseling, healthcare, criminal justice, education, and other settings. In this video you’ll have the opportunity to witness Miller apply the principles of MI in an actual client session.
Dr. Miller demonstrates how Motivational Interviewing helps people resolve their ambivalence about changing addictive behaviors. The therapist creates an atmosphere that is conducive to change by expressing empathy and encouragement, rolling with resistance, and helping the client explore the gaps between their current behaviors and the life they would like to lead. In this video, Dr. Miller works with a client who is considering changing his alcohol use and smoking habits. Jon Carlson and Judy Lewis introduce Dr. Miller, and facilitate an in-depth discussion of the further impact and uses of the model.
