Overview

Harm Reduction Therapy is an innovative approach that focuses on reducing the harmful consequences of drug use. The therapist accepts the client on his or her own terms and tries to reduce barriers to treatment.

In this video,  Dr. G. Alan Marlatt, an expert on harm reduction and relapse prevention, works with an African-American client who is addicted to heroin and considering entry into a methadone program. Jon Carlson and Judy Lewis introduce Dr. Marlatt, and facilitate an in-depth discussion of the further impact and uses of the model.

G. Alan Marlatt, PhD spent many years as a Professor of Psychology and Director of the Addictive Behaviors Research Center at the University of Washington. He has published over 200 articles and book chapters as well as five books, and his work on relapse prevention, assessment and harm reduction has had a wide impact on the treatment of addictions in the U.S. and abroad.
